Stowaways From Mainland China On The Rise, Coast Guard Warns World PC

Taipei, Sept. 20 (CNA) -- The problem of stowaways from mainland China entering Taiwan is fast

worsening, evidence that the number of illegal mainland immigrants arrested by the Taiwan authorities

has been increasing in recent years, according to the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) under the

Executive Yuan.



A total of 2,511 stowaways from mainland China to Taiwan had been detained by authorities as of

Sept. 9 since the beginning of this year. That brings the total number of arrested mainland Chinese

stowaways in Taiwan to 27,751.



Pingtang in mainland China's Fujian province is the major transfer spot for illegal human cargo

smuggling between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, he pointed out.

Tourism Festival To Be Held In Xiamen World PC

The China International Tourism Festival will be held in Xiamen, Fujian province in east China in

November, announced the National Tourism Administration Monday.



Tourism departments and organizations of Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries and regions

will participate in the festival, along with the top 100 domestic tourism agencies.



The festival will include a tourism forum, a tourism commodity exposition, a food festival and other

entertainment activities.



Ming Min, director of the provincial tourism bureau of Fujian, said the province boasts rich tourism

resources, including the World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site, Wuyi Mountain, unique earth towers

and the Maritime Silk Road.



The province saw 1.85 million overseas tourists in 2002, a 13.1 percent rise over the previous year.
