KIDNAP ORDEAL: A coast guard officer who had been abducted by Chinese fishermen on Sunday

returned to Matsu after spending the night in China's Fuzhou.



Via the "three small links," abducted Coast Guard officer Chiang Shao-nan yesterday returned to

Taiwan's Lienchiang County after he was abducted by Chinese fishermen and taken to Fujian

Province on Sunday.



Five officials took a Taiwanese fishing boat to Fujian's Mawei Port to retrieve Chiang.



People First Party (PFP) Legislator Tsao Yuan-jhang, who represents Lienchiang County and was

visiting Beijing, flew to Fujian Province around noon yesterday to meet up with Chiang and help with

his repatriation.

Nine People Still Missing in Fujian's Mountain Floods World PC

Fuzhou, Sept. 23 (XINHUA) -- Nine people were still missing in Yongtai County of east China's Fujian

Province after heavy mountain flooding hit the county late Saturday night, local officials said Tuesday.





The flood has so far killed at least 10 people, whose bodies have been buried according to local

customs, a spokesman from the county government said.



Each family of the 10 flood victims has received 5,000 yuan for burial fees and smart money from the

local government, the spokesman said.



Rescue workers are continuing to search the missing people, according to local officials.



Rainstorms pelted Songkou and Changqing towns, both in Yongtai county, at about 9:00 p.m. Saturday

night, leading to heavy mountain torrents which affected 1,420 local residents.



Eighty houses were destroyed or collapsed, and another some 100 were damaged to some extent. A

total of 1,000 hectares of crops have been submerged.



Primary investigation shows that the economic loss caused by the flooding amounted to approximately

80 million yuan (about 9.64 million US dollars).
