In planning the next
stage in the evolution of W&L's WWW presence it's very useful to
think about the broad range of what we MIGHT do. Every website has a
unique evolution, product of the preferences of the individuals who
constructed it and of institutional resources and priorities. The links
below will allow a quick look at some ways colleges are using the WWW to
- present themselves to the outside world and
- inform people on
their campuses of current events and services.
I've included
some novel uses (alumni affairs, campus tours) that might be of
interest to particular offices and people at W&L. Most of the links are
best viewed (for their full effect in terms of layout and graphics) with a
visual browser; some even have sound files.
In most cases the link below is not to the homepage itself, but rather to a
weblet that conveys general information about the institution.
If you are curious about an institution's initial homepage you can use
the first part of the URL shown in the 'Location' window into the 'Open'
dialog box (e.g., http://www.oberlin.edu will connect to
Oberlin's homepage).
