Metastuff for Summer 2001
2 June 2001
It occurred to me that I need someplace to stash the grander schemes
and thoughts that connect two or more of the elements of the collection
of current work
, sort of a crosswalk necessitated by the profusion of simultaneous projects
and lines of thought.

Of course a lot happened in that six weeks or so... and somehow things
never did get recorded here as they were unfolding. On the eve of
2 1/2 weeks of vacation, I need to summarize the threads as they now appear:
-
The GIS development campaign is somewhat stalled by a screwup about the
ESRI license, still sorting itself out, as a result of which we don't have
ArcGIS 8.1 up yet, and until we do it's difficult to proceed toward development
of ArcIMS or reconfiguration of the infrastructure for the deployment of
ArcView. Still hanging fire as well is Parmly 302, and the question of
how ArcView will be run.
-
When I return there will be another trip to Richmond to consult on their
GIS development and on what we might do in collaborating on the James River
projects. They will presumably have a GIS person assigned, but how much
that person will know about the product is unknown, so talking with them
about training will be prestidigitory at best. I hope to take John Blackburn
or Mark Rush or (ideally) both with me, to do show'n'tell on their projects.
-
Anthropology of East Asia (TuTh 3-5) will need a good bit of attention
when I return. I'm thinking to do it quite differently this time, less
centered on China, more involved with the present, more concerned with
generating and then seeking the answers to questions.
-
Human Geography (TuTh 9-11) is pretty much up to me to define and organize.
I'm expecting to make substantial use of ArcView 8.1 and geographynetwork,
and to base what we do in the AAAS Atlas of Population & Environment.

what else?
