Obviously some of these are 'primary' literature, our ultimate quarry,
but others are more general and [presumably] more accessible to the
non-specialist reader.

But the key articles that would get us up to speed on the very
latest happen to be hidden from these two searches above. It turns out
that the search archaeon would retrieve one of them:
AUTHOR Bult, Carol J.
TITLE Complete genome sequence of the methanogenic archaeon,
methanococcus jannaschii.
APPEARS IN Science 1996, v273n5278, Aug 23, p. 1058-1073.
SUMMARY The complete 1.66-megabase pair genome sequence of an autotrophic
archaeon, Methanococcus jannaschii, and its 58- and 16-kilobase
pair extrachromosomal elements have been determined by whole-
genome random sequencing. A total of 1,738 predicted protein-
coding genes were identified.
SUBJECT Genetics.

Olsen, Gary J.
This search doesn't get this summary 'Research News' article from
the same issue of Science, which provides all that the lay reader
would wish for by way of introduction to why one would want to know about
Archaea:
AUTHOR Morell, Virginia.
TITLE Life's last domain.
APPEARS IN Science 1996, v273n5278, Aug 23, p. 1043-1045.
SUMMARY The genome of the archaeon microbe Methanococcus jannaschii has
been sequenced, and researchers now have genomes for life's
three domains. However, only 44% of the archaeon's genes are
familiar.
Thus we see another limitation of PAO: it indexes words in titles
but not in summaries. So we see that we can't expect this (or any
other) periodical index to do everything for us. If we'd somehow thought
to search for 'archaeon', or been willing to wade through the 7700+ items
retrieved by a search for 'archae*' we might have been led to Bult et
al. 1996.
